Baptism

(Download ".pdf" lesson)

Born once die twice. Born twice die once. Confusing? Inconceivable? Yet Christ said, “Ye must be born again” (John 3:7). When an individual accepts Christ and is converted, the old man dies. His sins are forgiven and “he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2 Cor. 5:17). Baptism symbolizes the burial of the old sinful man who “walked according to the course of this world” (Eph. 2:2) and the rebirth of a new creature in Christ. So important is baptism, that it is mentioned more often that the cross.

7.  Why can’t we baptize babies?

Because a baby cannot:

“REPENT, and be baptized” (Acts 2:38).

NOTE: In order to be baptized a person must be willing to observe God's law, BELIEVE in God and REPENT of his or her sins. The fact is, babies cannot do any of these.

For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin” (Roman 6:4-6).

9.   Must a person wait until they are perfect to be baptized?

“For if there be first a ________ mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not” (2 Cor 8:12).
