Victory Over Sin

(Download ".pdf" lesson)

Many preach that all things are possible, but few actually believe it. They ask God to give them success with their finances, their families, their education and such.  Are these the things that Christ came to give success over? If not, what can they be?

What did Christ come to give strength to do? And, can it be achieved? Let’s use the Bible to discover the answers to these and other questions.

1.    What happens when believers behold the image of Jesus?

But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are _______ into the same _______ from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.” (2 Cor. 3:18)

We have heard the saying, “Birds of a feather flock together,” or “Show me your company and I’ll tell you who you are.” Friends, it is a law of nature, we are changed into the thing that we spend time.

2.    What did Jesus promise to save His people from?

And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their _____.”  (Matthew 1:21)

Christ did not come primarily to save man from poverty, social injustice, racism or political systems, as many religious leaders claim. He came to save man from SIN; the fundamental cause of all the ills that man faces. He came to restore in man the image of God (Luke 17:21).

3.    How much, of Himself, does God want to fill man with?

And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that  ye might be filled with ____ the fullness of _____.” (Ephesians 3:19)

God wants to fill man with ALL of Himself. This would allow man to not only gain victory over “all iniquity” (known and unknown), but would also remove his desire to sin. (Titus 2:14; Rom. 7:23-25; 8:14)

4.    What does God expect from believers?

While it is important to consider self dead to sin, to draw near to God, and to hold fast and repent; these things cannot be achieved unless the believer abides in God.

5.    What does the indwelling of God make man?

Nay, in all these things we are more than ___________ through him that loved us.” (Rom. 8:37)

6.    When God dwells in the believer, what is possible?

“(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of ________ _____;)  Casting down ______________, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every ___________ to the obedience of Christ.” (2 Cor. 10:4, 5)

It becomes possible for the believer to pull down Satan’s strongholds and cast down every evil thought and imagination.

7.    What does it mean to abide in Christ?

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ _______ in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I _____ by the _______ of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” (Gal. 2:20)

It means to allow Christ to live out His perfect character in you and to allow Him to constrain your carnal ways until His righteousness is seen in you (2 Cor. 5:14; Rom. 8:3, 4). This can only be achieved by dying daily to self.

8.    Who gives the power to abide in the way of holiness?

For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of _____ good ___________.” (Phil 2:13)

God is both the “stimulus” and “sustainer.” As the believer looks to Him, high and lifted up, he is drawn to accept Christ’s salvation. Yet, like Peter, the believer must continue to look to Christ because if he turns his eyes away, he will sink back into sin. Redemption is about God furnishing man with all the necessary power he needs to find Him, remain in His grace and be saved.

9.    What does abiding in God give believers power to do?

“Now unto him that is able to ______ you from _______, and to ________ you ___________ before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy” (Jude 24)

God desires to “keep us from falling” and “to present us faultless” before His throne.

10. What is one thing that God does to keep the believer from falling?

There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who ____  ____suffer you to be tempted _______ that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” (1 Cor. 10:13)

God’s faithfulness is surety for every believer. He has promised to NOT allow them to face anything they CANNOT overcome (Psalm 34:19).

11.  Why do believers need the Lord dwelling in them?

“The Lord ________ how to _______ the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished” (2 Peter 2:9)

While man cannot discern every temptation that comes upon him, God knows them all. More importantly, He knows how to deliver His people from them.

12.  How does man receive God into his life?

13.  What if believer falls into sin, is he forsaken?

“My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an _________ with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” (1 John 2:1)

The believer may fall into sin, but he can rest assured that he has an advocate, Jesus Christ. His responsibility is to keep getting up each time he falls (Pro. 24:16).

14.  What is the final state of the believer who allows God to remain in him?

“Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the _________  __________, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” (2 Peter 1:4)

15.  Are you willing to have God abide and remain in you?
