Prayer

(Download ".pdf" lesson)

Many, because of their perception of God as the consummate provider, have a tendency to view prayer as something to be done only when there is a need. Is this what prayer is all about, praying just to get? Or is there more to it than meets the eye? Let us find out from the word of God.

1.    What is prayer?

“Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your ________ before him: God is a refuge for us” (Psalm 62:8). "I poured out my complaint before Him; I shewed before Him my trouble" (Psalm 142.2).

NOTE: Prayer is pouring out our souls before the Lord.

2.    Will God hear when you pray?

“I cried unto the LORD with my voice, and he ________ me out of his holy hill” (Psalm 3:4). “I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears” (Psalm 34:4).

3.   What types of prayers are not heard?

When “Ye ask amiss.” James 4:3

If you “regard iniquity in [your] heart.” Psalm 66:18

“If ye do not forgive.” Mark 11:25, 26

If you have “idols in your hearts.” Eze. 14:3

If honor isn't given to the wife. 1 Peter 3:7

4.   How can you have confidence that God will hear your prayers?

“Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless _____ my will, but thine, be done” (Luke 22:42).

5.   What type of prayer does God answer?

“Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed _____________ that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months” (James 5:17).

6.   How should I approach prayer?

“But let him ask in _______, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed” (James 1:6).

7.   Is praying in the morning sufficient?

“My voice shalt thou hear in the _________, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up” (Psalm 5:3). “Men ought _________ to pray, and not to faint.” (Luke 18:1). “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thess. 5:17).

8.   Does God always say yes?

“For this thing I besought the Lord _______, that it might depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” (2 Cor. 12:8, 9).

NOTE: More important than having our prayers answered our way, should be glorifying God in our lives regardless of the answer. Remember, it is about His will and not ours.

9.   What should you do when you run into difficult situations?

“And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and _______ unto him, though he bear long with them?” (Luke 18:7). "And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O lord, holy and true, doest thou not _________ and _____________ our blood on them that dwell on the earth? (Rev. 6:10).

10.  What is the purpose of prayer?

“That they should _______ the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us” (Acts 17:27). “But seek ye first the _________ of God, and his __________” (Matthew 6:33).

11.  Are you willing to change you prayer life to be in harmony with the will of God?
